An Outsider's Review of Vegemite

Updated: Oct 4, 2018

Brisbane, QLD, Australia: Day 1

I’d like to start this post off with a sturdy clap to all of my Aussies out there enjoying their Vegemite toast. Way to get that (what nutrients does it even have??) [nutrient] in to start your day.

I also started my day with Vegemite. And then promptly wished I hadn’t.

If you don’t hail from the land down under, and have no idea what I am talking about, let me educate you. Picture peanut butter, or whatever butter gets you going in the morning, be you an almond, sunflower, or hazelnut with a *hint* (yeah) of coco (you know who you are) person. Now take away anything that you love about that particular morning spread. Now add in a yeast infection, over-salt it, and dump a packet of soy sauce in there. Sorry for that image.

On a more positive note, I’ve been noticing a change in myself that actually prompted me to try this black tar breakfast spread in the first place. For some background about me, I was probably the world’s pickiest eater as a child in the most obnoxious way. Because my [wonderful] parents refused to feed me most of the foods your average American child ate (chicken nuggets, macaroni with hot dogs, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches), everything I disliked were common foods. This really made me a hassle to be around and have as a friend, and at least one friend from every stepping stone of my life forced me to try peanut butter, screaming YOU'LL LIKE IT ITS REALLY GOOD as they shoved a sandwich, candy bar, or spoonful towards my face.

A good friend once told me that he likes to order sandwiches with ingredients that he doesn't like. What??

If you think this is weird, I agree. Sandwiches are meant to be enjoyed. But there's something to be admired about the self-discipline he takes to expand his culinary horizons. Upon embarking on my journey down under, I have taken this same notion in stride. I told my home-stay mom that I eat anything (this is not true), and am doing just that, enthusiastically consuming anything she puts in front of me with no complaints. (Luckily, everything she's cooked so far has been amazing!!)

In response to this, the most amazing thing has happened. Within only a few hours of changing my mindset to thinking positively about all the food in front of me, everything has seemed like a new adventure. My mind has influenced my taste buds and we are thriving on all of the food this country has to offer.

I encourage anyone who's made it to reading this far to do the same. You never know what will become your favorite new food! (To be very clear, Vegemite still does not taste good though).

Cheers mates!
